Oscar' Big Adventure
Oscar didn't remember very much about that fateful
day. It started out normally enough. He had awakened early when he
heard the master of the house getting ready to leave the big cage they
all lived in. Oscar knew he would have to time it perfectly if he wanted
to make his escape successful. He still found it puzzling that the
humans he lived with felt they must keep him trapped at all times.
Didn't they know that a cat worth his whiskers just had to be free....allowed
to explore more than just the small, confined place they called a home?
He looked over distainfully at the other cats he lived with who were all
curled up in furry balls. They seemed so content that Oscar just
smirked at them with that little curl of his lip. Well...he would show
them all today that they couldn't keep a good cat locked away from that
fascinating place called the world!
Darkness still cloaked the outside world when
Oscar's master opened the door. Now if Oscar had been a white cat, he probally
would have failed in his escape plan. But luckily for Oscar, he was
coal black (for the most part) and disappeared easily into the early morning
darkness. He scuttled quickly under a thick bush next to the front
door where he lay with his heart thudding loudly. Waiting for what
seemed like hours, he finally ventured out ready to begin a grand adventure.
Sniffing the pre-dawn air, he caught exciting smells drifting towards him
from the World of Open Field across the street.

Much later Oscar purred with satisfaction.
It had been an intoxicating couple of hours spent merrilly chasing a variety
of squirrels, bunnies, birds, frogs, and one scrawny stray cat. He lay
contentedly under a small bush that bordered the field he had been romping
in. One eye closed sleepily, and the other eye followed it very quickly.
Soon Oscar was dreaming about exciting captures made while happily hunting;
however, a sense of unease worked its way into his dream state. Oscar
yawned, stretched, and then opened his eyes. Where was the sun? Why
was it so dark? What was that strange smell in the wind that was blowing
fiercely around his face? Suddenly, the world seemed to explode with
a searing white light followed quickly by a violent crashing noise.
A freak summer storm had descended with a vengeance upon the world of Oscar.
Frantically digging all his claws into the ground,
he made a mad dash across the field toward the safety of his home.
That was the last thing Oscar could remember clearly after the blinding
finger of electricity struck him directly on the top of his head, right
between his twitching ears. When Oscar woke up, the world around
him was calm once again, and the sun was busy drying his drenched fur.
Taking a few much needed minutes to lick his messy
coat back into place, Oscar stretched out his long legs and took off at
a leisurely lope towards his home.
Approaching the front door with his usual swagger, he jumped as it was
flung wide open. His mistress (thought of as the head cat by the
content crew inside) ran out to scoop him up in an undignified embrace.
She then began to cry over him in an embarrassing manner while complaining
about how worried she had been about him. As if he couldn't take
care of himself! Humans were so annoying he thought. She began opening
a can of his favorite cat food, Alpo Beef Banquet...and that's when it
happened. Oscar casually asked, "What's for dinner dear?" Now
what's wrong with her, Oscar thought as he approached her prone body on
the floor. Didn't she ever hear a cat ask what's for dinner before?

Now don't go writing me with your disbelieving
human hands. This is exactly the way Nightmare told it to me.
And that would be in cat language! The only editing I did was in
changing his name to Oscar to protect the innocent. That would be
me of course.
